Introductory Latin: Indirect Command

Exercise 32: Indirect Command

EXACTLY AS PURPOSE CLAUSES (Ex. 29) EXCEPT THAT THE MAIN VERB INDICATES THE GIVING OF AN ORDER:

I ordered Caesar to build a bridge.
I asked Caesar to build a bridge.

ut/ne+subjunctive (sequence applies)

Rules: exactly as purpose clauses: after primary main verb, present subj; after historic, imperfect.

NB: When translating into Latin, be careful about the number and person of the verb in the ut clause: ask yourself who is meant to carry out the order.

METHOD FOR DEALING WITH SENTENCES IN WHICH UT OCCURS:

i) Is the verb of the ut-clause indicative or subjunctive?
ii) If indicative. ut = when/as; translate the indicative directly as normal.
iii) If subjunctive. Is there a signpost word (ita, adeo, tam etc)?

Signpost word indicates Result clause (Ex. 30)
No signpost word indicates Purpose clause (Ex. 29) UNLESS the main verb expresses command ( = indirect command in this exercise)
